Everyone wants to be loved. Whether it be a friendship love or a romantic love, we all are designed and fashioned by God to desire intimacy from others. Men and women need to develop healthy relationships with the same sex before they can be in a healthy relationship with a significant other of the opposite sex. Love is not something you do, it’s something you are; you were made for love. One of the biggest problems with the younger generation is their definition of love. In today’s society, love has been defined by our media as sex. While sex is certainly a beautiful aspect of love (as God designed it), focusing on sex alone destroys the concept of love for both individuals involved in the act. If we really want to know what love is, we need to read the passage in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 which most of us know so well…”love is patience, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast…” etc.
When everything you do mimics that passage, you are not only able to receive love, but you’re able to give it. One false statement I hear many people say who’ve had a bad experience is, “love hurts.” If you truly believe the lie that love hurts, you will always receive a counterfeit love. You cannot give what you don’t have, but you can give what God has. His love is never failing, it’s unconditional, and it sets boundaries. God never forces His love on us, but instead He waits until we are ready. God doesn’t barge into our lives uninvited, He waits for us to knock on His door. You can’t receive love if you don’t give it and you can’t give love if you don’t have it. It’s much easier to give love when you know that love doesn’t hurt. Love has nothing to do with pain. The devil has strategically embedded that thought into our minds for so many centuries, that many of us have accepted that lie as the truth.
When you believe a lie, you live a lie. It’s not okay to believe something about yourself that God doesn’t believe about you. If God loves us unconditionally, we need to love ourselves unconditionally so that we can love others the same way. Those who know God know love, and when you know love, you will experience life in a greater glory than you ever have before; To live in abundance, we need to love in abundance.
