As children, our parents tell us to go to college because they want us to get a good education, they tell us to take care of our health so that we don’t get sick, etc. But what happens when we become adults? Are we still going to listen to the advice our parents give us, or are we going to go wild, get drunk, start sleeping around, etc?
Structure, such as parents, a manager, a mentor, etc, was designed to guide us to become whoever it is that God wants us to be, but what happens if we lose that structure for some reason, will we still know who we are and what we’re created for?
People who are externally motived will look for some external thing to give them a purpose in their lives, but trying to find a purpose in external things is a deception. True happiness doesn’t come from what’s going on around you, but it comes from what’s happening inside you. Living for ourselves is a deception that brings nothing but serious pain and sorrow in the long-run.
There will always be someone who will try to sell you something to tell you what you’re supposed to do with your life, but at the end of the day, you need to know for yourself what you’re created for.
I’ve heard lots of people say that we need to look within ourselves, and that’s when we’ll discover who we are. But when we look inside ourselves, what exactly are we looking at?
1 Corinthians 6:19 says: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” For those of us who don’t know the Holy Spirit, getting to know Him through Jesus would be a great place to start.
When we’re motivated by the internal love of God in our hearts, that’s when we’ll discover our purpose. If someone can motivate you to do something, someone else can surely manipulate you out of doing that. But if you’re motivated by the love of God to be obedient to what He says and make an impact in this world, no one can talk you out of it.
Money is a Poor Motivator
Many people are motivated by the extra commission they receive in their paycheck if they sell more products, work harder, etc. While making more money is generally a good thing, if making more money is the only reason why we do what we do for a living, we end up becoming people who merely exist but never truly live.
Not too long ago I read a story in the news about a man who killed himself because after getting a Ph.D. and studying in school for 7-8 years, he couldn’t find a job. Things like money, status, jobs, etc are all uncertain, but when you know who you are in your heart and why God created you, that will never change.
The people who actually change the world are people who relentlessly pursue the vision God gave them internally in their hearts. When we open the eyes of our hearts, God will give us the motivation we need to be the change we’re looking for.
